The other day, when I logged in to BlogcastFMs online community I read something David Crandall said and I had to wholeheartedly agree:
“Don’t agonize over design before you start”
Now this comes from a design guy with a 6 figure business intelligence career!
In other words, don’t focus too much on all the little details when you plan to build a website, create a product or start any other project for that matter.
The basics should be covered of course. But in the end, all you really need to start are usually no more than three to five major components. Everything else can be added later on.
To build a basic website, you just need to install WordPress, find a theme you like, add some pages and optionally a blog.
If you want to start selling your products/services online, you simply install a shop plugin or get someone to do it for you.
Yes, design is important but honestly, there is no perfect design. There will always be stuff you want to change or improve. And that’s okay!
Since I set up my very first website back in 2007, I have changed layouts, colors and other design details all the time!
I love tinkering on my site to improve it in all kinds of ways, but I don’t let it keep me from doing what is most important: get my products and services out there, so I can help improve other people’s lives.
And here is a little secret: If you are one of these people that do obsess over design (or other) details, be honest with yourself and admit that this might just be a form of procrastination.
Again, this is something I learned from my own experience and it cost me a lot of time and energy I could have used to do way more productive work.
Don’t make the same mistake!
So, now that I admitted to being a recovering detail freak (yes, I’m a Virgo), let us know in the comments if you are too :-)
