After I decided to switch domain names from Kabai33.com to CreativeWebBiz.com, I started researching how to go about it. Most blog posts I found on the topic described methods that included mod-rewrites, altering my .htaccess file and moving all of my files to another place…too complicated for me! I like it simple! Usually I am always happy to improve my skills but this time I really didn’t feel like investing the time to figure it all out. So I found an easier way and here is how it works:
- Register your new domain with your web host.
- Ask your web host to make the new url your main domain. This means that your account, your databases, your files and everything else will be automatically renamed to match your new web address.
- Create a permanent redirect (301) from your old domain to your new one (if you don’t know how to do this, ask your web host to help you with this). A 301 will make sure that everyone who tries to find you under the old url will be redirected to the new one.
- Change all external links that point to your site, e.g. the links on your Facebook page and your Twitter profile.
- Make the Google juice flow by submitting your new site url, so they can start crawling and indexing it.
That’s it!
Easy right? When you’re done, let me know how it worked out for you in the comments.
